NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Second-grader Alisha Solano had a smooth first day of school Wednesday at George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School in New Rochelle.
“She was excited to begin,” said her father, Jorge, who walked out of the building with his daughter at the end of the day toward other happy parents and students.
The Solanos had anticipated the day all summer with nervous excitement.
Although Alisha had a hard time getting into the swing of things Wednesday morning, she made it through.
“The first day of school is like the first day on your first job,” Jorge Solano said. “You anticipate it, then you’re like, ‘Wow, it’s over.’ ”
He said he was pleased that his daughter has a nice teacher for the next nine months.
Alisha is also glad she can make new friends and reconnect with old ones this year.
“I like school,” she said.
Alisha begins a full-day schedule with other elementary school students Thursday after a half-day Wednesday.
Middle school students continue their second full day of classes Thursday, while New Rochelle High School freshmen and sophomores report Thursday. High school juniors and seniors will join them Friday.
