NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.-- County Executive Robert P. Astorino will join the New Rochelle NAACP and the Remington Boys and Girls Club to kick off the Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway and Academic Pledge Program On Saturday at 1 p.m.

The program will give away backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 500 students who have committed to achieve high academic standards during the 2013-14 school year.

The students and their parents sign a pledge at the beginning of the school year committing the students to a series of academic principles. Those principles include:

  • coming to school prepared with all required materials and all completed assignments;
  • paying attention and participating in class;
  • asking for help when needed; and
  • respecting teachers and other classmates.

The pledge also requires parental consent to submit quarterly report cards in order to track students’ progress over the course of the academic year.

If students honor their pledge, Astorino is offering free season passes to Playland under the Astorino Challenge in Education (ACE), which grants passes to the amusement park in Rye to students in grades 6-12 who achieve either a final grade point average of at least 3.8 or a 95 percent, “A” average.

“When students go back to school well prepared, they have a much greater chance at success. That’s what this pledge is about: preparing kids physically and mentally for the school year ahead,”  Astorino said. “And the ACE challenge is the incentive for kids to honor their pledges."
