NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The New Rochelle Board of Education is poised to name a permanent successor to interim Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Korostoff.

According to President David Lacher, the Board of Education has identified an ideal final candidate, whose name is being withheld pending a site visit to his current district, a review of references and a criminal background check.

The board began searching for Korostoff’s replacement last year when former Superintendent Richard Organisciark stepped down in October due to health-related issues. In his announcement, Lacher noted that the potential superintendent fulfills each of the district’s expectations in a candidate.

“The candidate meets the district’s high expectations and reflects the community’s desire for an educator with vision, a high degree of fiscal responsibility and an intimate appreciate of the challenges and strengths of a diverse community,” he said. “I can also tell you that this exceptional applicant has the unanimous backing of the entire board.”

Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, a national search firm, helped the board narrow the field of candidates from 41 to 20 in November. Nine candidates were eventually presented to the board of education for private interviews before they settled on an ideal candidate.

“Now that the board has reached the point where one candidate has emerged as the clear preference, we felt it appropriate to share with the community,” Lacher said.

While Lacher noted that it is highly improbable, if contract talks are to break down, or the finalist fails his background check, the search will immediately be resumed.

“The promise we have made to the community remains paramount in our minds. We will not settle for a superintendent who is merely adequate,” he said. “We are confident that we have found a rising star for our schools.”
