On Tuesday, a New Rochelle family that has students enrolled in the public school district received a disturbing piece of mail that threatened harm to the children.

After the family met with interim Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Korostoff, New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll and detectives, it was determined that the falsified return address was the same as Jefferson Elementary School.

Police are continuing the investigation, and have beefed up security around the school since. Any other families that receive a suspicious letter to alert authorities by calling (914) 654-2300. Commissioner Carroll did not immediately respond to inquiries on Thursday afternoon.

“It is important to let residents know that the handwritten return address on the envelope was the name and address of one of our schools. It was intended to indicate that the letter was an official school mailing,” Korostoff said in a statement to parents. “Clearly, it was not.”
