Dating to last year, the board has been engaging in “meaningful public conversations" as it continues developing a five-year plan, through 2020, that will center on promoting intellectual development, safe and respectful school grounds, a talented faculty, connecting with the community and exercising fiscal responsibility in trying economic times.

According to board President Lianne Merchant, the mission of the Strategic Roadmap is that “the city school district, through an active partnership amongst community, parents, staff and students, will provide access to a high-quality and challenging education for every child, in a safe, nurturing environment that embraces our rich diversity and drives our success.”

By 2020, the Strategic Roadmap is calling for the district to improve on test scores in the middle and high school, and to reduce the achievement gaps that are correlated with race and class. The plan also predicts that the district will have a reserve fund that is near the maximum allowed by the state Education Department.

The deadline for the community to provide input to the board has been extended through Friday, Feb. 20. Those interested can detail what they hope to see from the school district in the future by sending comments to strategicroadmap@newrochelle.k12.ny.us. The comments will then be reviewed publicly at the next Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Barnard School.
