New Rochelle Elementary School Principal to Retire

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Columbus Elementary Schoo l principal Yigal Joseph is retiring at the end of this school year, after 13 years on the job.

“I will miss the wonderful students and parents as well as the exceptionally gifted teachers and staff,” Joseph said in an email.

“We share a common vision that all students will succeed when we all work in unison,” he said. “In the words of Michelangelo, 'The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.'"

Joseph said he has always been proud to see students succeed when given assistance.

“My greatest joy as an educator and instructional leader has been to witness the academic success of 'critical needs' students when they are offered an inquiry-based, discovery-oriented, problem-based learning pedagogy and curriculum,” he said. “This ensures that students will learn to utilize the tools of reading, writing and arithmetic to become critical thinkers, problem solvers and citizen leaders.”

Joseph has had a career as an educator, school psychologist, and administrator since he began teaching in 1970.

“I have chosen to retire at the height of my accomplishments as a building leader, while Columbus is recognized for its accomplishments,” he said.

Joseph is the second New Rochelle School District administrator who is retiring at the end of this school year. New Rochelle High School athletic director John Magnotta is also retiring.
