William B. Ward Elementary School library media specialist Alfred Menna and Jeannine Shields, an instructional technology facilitator at the school were among the 127 educators from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom that were selected to attend the 2015 Discovery Education Network Summer Institute, which concentrated on utilizing digital content and new technology to benefit students in the classroom.

According to officials with Discovery Education, the event “connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences and in-person events; fostering valuable networking idea sharing and inspiration.”

During the weeklong event, Menna and Shields attended a series of interactive seminars and hands-on workshops that featured the latest technologies that can be used in the classroom to improve student achievement. It provided the educators an opportunity to cohesively discuss and experience ideas and strategies to integrate technology into lesson plans.

In a joint statement, Menna and Shields said they are eager to share what they learned with their students and coworkers.

“During this experience, we learned from and connected with other enthusiastic educators from around the world who share a passion for using the latest technologies and digital content to support the success of each learner,” they said. “We’re excited to share the new, creative strategies and techniques for integrating technology into the classroom instruction with our colleagues, so even more students can benefit from this professional learning opportunity.”

Discovery Education Vice President Lance Rougeux noted that the selection of Menna and Shields was an obvious choice to bring the information back to the New Rochelle School District.

“(Their) selection demonstrates their outstanding leadership and commitment to using the most innovative tools and methods to enhance students’ learning and classroom experience,” he said. “The skills and knowledge they’ve gained from this learning experience will increase their students’ engagement in their own learning and better prepare them for success beyond the classroom.”
