NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Sixth graders at Issac E. Young Middle School will host a lemonade stand on Monday, Sept. 22 to raise money for childhood cancer research in honor of a story they learned about through their summer reading.

The stand will be open from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Isaac E. Young Middle School is located at 270 Centre Ave., New Rochelle.

Over the summer, 6th graders at Isaac E. Young Middle School read "Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change." It was an inspiring book that introduced students to 30 children around the world who have made a profound difference in their communities.

One of the stories featured Alexandra Scott. Alex, as she was affectionately known, was diagnosed with a form of pediatric cancer before her first birthday. When Alex turned four, with the help of her parents, she decided to host a lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Alex died in 2004 after helping to raise more than $1 million. She was just eight years old.

Alex’s work continues today through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit organization that has raised more than $80 million to help find a cure for all children with cancer.

Inspired by the book and Alex’s outsized courage, Isaac E. Young students will host their own lemonade stand to coincide with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All funds raised will support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
