NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona Grammar School joining Iona Preparatory School will strengthen the school’s academics, athletics, and extracurricular programs, according to Iona Prep.
Iona Prep purchased the grammar school last week after a year of discussions between prep board members and school staff, the school said. Both schools will soon begin the transition process into one K-12 school. A timetable is still being worked out.
As it stands now, Prep President Brother Thomas Leto would stay on as president of the newly formed Iona Preparatory School, which will have one board of directors.
John Verni, a 1981 Prep alum, and chairman of the board, said there are three parts to the deal.
“First we need to strengthen Iona Grammar School’s academic programs so that students from the Grammar School will come prepared to handle the work at Iona Prep,” Verni said in a statement.
“Second, we need to maximize available field space in the area of our campus to accommodate our thriving athletic programs which have won recent championships in baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse and soccer, to name a few,” he said.
“The purchase of the Iona Grammar School land from the Christian Brother Institute, Inc., the business arm of the congregation," he said, "allows Iona Prep to help secure the economic future of our founding order which has been under financial duress in recent years due to rising health care costs and an aging order. For all these reasons and others, it was the right thing to do at this time to insure the future success of Iona Prep.”
