Iona College Assists Transfer Students With Info

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. –  Student Di Andre Ruff was happy that she could meet with an Iona College admissions counselor to receive an admissions decision on the spot, answers on financial aid, and obtain information about the maximum allowable transfer credits during the school’s second Transfer Wednesday sessions.

“I don’t have to wait,” said Ruff, who just finished her second year at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, N.Y.

“The advisor is very nice,” she said. “I’m interested in the school. I want to major in speech pathology."

This is Iona's first year of holding a day for students like Ruff, who are considering switching to Iona from other four-year private universities or two-year community colleges.

“It’s like a one-stop shop for students who are interested in transferring,” said Christina DeCrescenzo, Iona enrollment coordinator and undergraduate admissions transfer counselor.

DeCrescenzo said the admissions department offers the sessions so that transfer students don’t have to come back for follow-up visits with admissions counselors.

The department also seeks to increase the school’s transfer-student numbers; increase, establish, and maintain relationships with possible and current transfer students; assist them with scholarship money as much as possible; make transfer students feel they will be comfortable at Iona and are making the right decision; and help them with the transition from their previous school to Iona.

The department also invites potential transfer students met during recruiting throughout the year to come to the transfer sessions. They are also held in December and January for incoming transfer students looking to enroll for the spring semester.

The third transfer session will be held Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is the final opportunity for students looking to transfer to Iona to receive help or a decision before classes resume Aug. 28.

“They’ve been really successful,” said DeCrescenzo of the events.

Iona Senior Fiona Horgan, who said she had a smooth transfer process after enrolling in the school from Quinnipiac University during the second semester of her sophomore year,  says transfer info days are beneficial.

“I think it’s a great idea,” she said. Horgan also serves as an admissions tour guide.
