Members of the Columbus Elementary Chess Club recently met for their annual chess club barbecue and “simultaneous” party where they faced off against International Chess Master Georgios Alexopoulos.

At the barbecue, Alexopoulos played several games at one time against the Columbus Chess Club and alumni while the group enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza while putting their minds to the test against one of the world’s best chess minds.

According to Mark Hegenauer, the teacher who leads the club, each year, as many as 45 students participate in the club, where they hone their skills at practices three times per week. The group also participates in several tournaments each year, including a national competition in Nashville last year where they represented New Rochelle well.

“The kids had a great time honing their skills and meeting up with each other,” he said. “We’re looking forward to having another exciting chess-filled school year.”
