During the 2012-2013 academic year, more than 3,000 students completed 171,760 hours of community service, putting the college on the Honor Roll for the fifth consecutive year.
“Students at College of New Rochelle are regularly engaged in service activities through curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular experiences that value service to society and self,” said Helen Wolf, Director of Campus Ministry. “They live the mission of the college: Serviam, ‘I will serve.’ I am inspired by them as they commit themselves to service, especially to the marginalized and disenfranchised.”
Three specific service programs were recognized.
The Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day for High School Girls brought together 12 CNR students and members of the Association for Women in Mathematics to serve female high school students from three schools in New York City. During the event, CNR students provided a variety of services such as leading sessions, conducting seminars and establishing a career panel. Session topics included practical uses of math in fields such as cryptography and blood splatter analysis.
The CNR Children’s Summer Program involved college students and children in grades K-6 from the Ward School in New Rochelle. CNR students led two summer enrichment programs mirroring typical classroom settings, where they taught children on a daily basis about math, science and more.
During last year’s March Spring Break, CNR students engaged in the Dominican Republic Art Therapy Service Trip. They traveled to La Romana, where they led art therapy sessions for impoverished locals along with help from the Foundation to Project Growth and Hope in the Community. CNR also donated about 900 pounds of items including educational supplies and clothing.
Launched in 2006, the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll annually highlights higher education institutions that involve students in exemplary community service programs.
