Tavarez was selected for being an outstanding Hispanic woman who has achieved academic excellence while being actively involved in her church and community. While at the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, Tavarez performed well in her academic studies and was active in many church and community service projects. “We are so proud to have Tiffany as our first Mariano Rivera Scholarship recipient," said College of New Rochelle President Judith Huntington. The scholarship was established by Rivera, the legendary New York Yankees pitcher, a New Rochelle resident.

"Her academic excellence, community involvement, and work with her church align perfectly with the College’s Ursuline heritage and mission of encouraging students to fully develop their talents, gain greater understanding of themselves and help others,”

Rivera commented on Tavarez receiving the scholarship.

“Tiffany has spirit, passion, and determination," said Rivera. "We hope that this scholarship gives her the opportunity to continue to pursue her career path and excel in her goals. With focus and faith in God, we know that she will go far.” The Mariano Rivera Scholarship will cover room and board, tuition and fees for each of the four years of college.

To maintain the scholarship, she must meet academic standards set by the college and continue to be active in a community leadership role on campus.

Tavarez, whose family is originally from Puerto Rico, will be the first member of her family to attend college.

“To know that I will be able to attend such a distinguished women’s college is a wonderful feeling. I am honored to have been chosen for this special award,” said Tavarez. “My family and I are grateful to both The College of New Rochelle and the Riveras for this great opportunity.” For more information, contact Jennifer Mahoney at 914-654-5917.
