Members of the Transport Workers Union, Local 100, that includes drivers, mechanics and matrons for Mile Square, learned Friday that their executive board had voted unanimously to strike, a union spokesman told News 12 and other media outlets.
Yonkers Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Yazurlo posted a message on the district website Friday notifying residents that the strike was not aimed at the school districts but was a company labor issue.
"Any family that is serviced by the Mile Square bus company will not have service Monday if the strike is in effect," Yazurlo said. "Once we were alerted to a possibility if a strike we looked for alternates to getting the children to and from schools. But the contract with (Miles Square) is so big that it made that virtually impossible."
Yazurlo asked that parents find other transportation options to get their children to school.
Mile Square transports all bused students to the Mount Vernon schools and approximately 50 percent of the students in both New Rochelle and Yonkers. More than 10,000 students may be looking for transportation Monday.
Workers called the strike vote after contract negotiations failed. The contract ran out in 2009 for nearly 550 workers.
Mount Vernon also posted an alert on its website asking parents to be prepared to find alternate means of transportation in the event of a strike. The New Rochelle school district through a spokesperson that it would have a plan in place over the weekend.
