The Charles County Sheriff announced on Wednesday, Oct. 19, that school resource officers were busy all day, busting a pair of students who were caught with the very real-looking guns during separate instances that are reportedly unrelated.

First, shortly before 10 a.m., school administrators at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center said that they detected the smell of marijuana on a 14-year-old student, leading to further investigation by the resource officer.

During that subsequent search, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said that the officer determined that the student was in possession of baggies containing residue of marijuana and a replica firearm / BB gun, which was recovered from his waistband.

Hours later, in an unrelated incident at approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, a 16-year-old student found himself in a similar situation when an administrator reported the odor of marijuana once again.

In the second instance, the administrator located a replica firearm / BB gun and marijuana in his backpack, which was all recovered by the school resource officer.

Both students were released to a parent.

“The school resource officer is consulting with the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office in reference to the cases and charges are pending further investigation,” the spokesperson for the sheriff said.

“Parents are urged to talk with their children about the dangers of bringing replica firearms, weapons, and drugs to school and the consequences they could face including criminal charges and or disciplinary action from the Charles County Public Schools.”
