The incident happened around midnight Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Yaphank.

A marked Suffolk County Police vehicle was parked in the roadway blocking traffic due to an earlier police investigation at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Yaphank Woods Boulevard.

A police officer was in the roadway handling traffic control when a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling southbound on William Floyd Parkway struck the rear of a GMC Yukon, then struck the police vehicle, according to Suffolk County Police.

The force of the impact caused the GMC to strike the officer, said Suffolk County Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, William Petersohn, age 38, of Mastic, and the police officer were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. The driver of the GMC was not injured.

Major Case Unit detectives charged Petersohn with driving while intoxicated. He will be arraigned at a later date.
