“The students and I were so surprised by this honor,” said Pucci. “I'm still in shock that my class won. I totally downplayed the 'challenge' aspect of the project and focused on the learning.”

Pucci and the class heard of the news in a conference call with DuPont last Friday.

More than 9,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and U.S. territories were submitted to The DuPont Challenge, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as the nation’s premier science writing competition.

The “1st Grade Pucci’s Pink Group Team’s” entry, “Life Cycle of a Butterfly” was selected from hundreds of K-5 entries across the United States and Canada. As a Grand Prize winner, DuPont will host a “Science Is Fun Day” at the school as well as provide a Britannica Digital Learning E-book collection and Britannica’s 5 iOS science apps.

Pucci also earned an all expense-paid trip to the 2017 NSTA Conference on Science convention in Los Angeles.

“I am so proud of this accomplishment.” added Kate Murphy, Lordship Elementary School principal. “Mrs. Pucci took the initiative to expand a learning lesson into this national competition and was able to generate lots of excitement about the challenge with her students which in the end gave her, our students and our elementary school national recognition.”

Pucci and her team will be organizing the “Science is Fun Day” before the end of the school year.
