Four positive votes were needed for the bridge loan that would have helped fund the Theilke Arboretum Education Center.
Council President Mary Jane Surrago and Councilman Michael O'Hagan were absent. Councilman Pazan and Councilwoman Martin voted yes while Councilman Skip Husking and Councilwoman Kristine Morieko voted no.
FOGRAS has raised approximately $85,000 which leaves a $153,000 gap, said Thomas Scerbo, the project’s co-chair.
“We’re going to refocus our efforts on the construction side to see what kind of donations we can get for services and materials,” Scerbo told Daily Voice. “We’re going to re-energize fundraising efforts and see how this can break.”
FOGRAS would have needed to continue raising funds in order to pay back the loan. The group was hoping that seeing the “beautiful building” would make raising the remaining funds an easier task, the co-chair said.
“It’s a bit of a setback but we’d have to continue fundraising anyway to pay back the bridge loan,” Scerbo said. “So that’s what we’re going to do.”
