Louis Mercatante Jr., 83, Formerly Of Valhalla

VALHALLA, N.Y. – Louis Mercatante Jr., a former Valhalla resident, died Oct. 2. He was 83. 

He was born June 27, 1929, in Valhalla to Louis Mercatante Sr. and Rose Gennodie Mercatante. He served with the Atomic Energy Commission in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. 

Mercatante worked as a butcher with A&P in Greenwich, Conn. Before that, he worked as a union carpenter. He most recently was of Ossining. 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Duncan Mercatante, of Ossining; four children, Louis Mercatante III, of Ossining, Shari Mercatante, of Valhalla, Holly Johnson, of Ossining, and Marylou Caldarulo, of Trout Creek; two sisters, Mary DeRuvo, of Charlotte, N.C., and Antoinette Nannariello, of Thornwood; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alfonso and Nicholas. 

Visiting hours are from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Hawthorne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne or Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
