RYE, N.Y. On Carly Schwabs first day of competition at the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships, the 10-year-old won the 50-yard breaststroke and set a new meet record.
Schwab was at it again Tuesday, winning the 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle in her second consecutive event and equaling a record set in 1989.
Schwab, swimming for Sleepy Hollow Country Club, touched the wall in 27.15 seconds, a split second before Kate Douglass of the New York Athletic Club. Melissa Lavery established the earlier standard.
When I touched the wall I heard the announcer say something, but I wasnt sure if it was me, said Schwab, a fifth-grader-to-be at Todd Elementary School in Briarcliff. Once I got out of the pool. a girl told me I had just tied the record. I was happy and excited.
It was the second consecutive night that Schwab and Douglass raced stroke for stroke. Douglass was seeded first and Schwab second coming into the freestyle final.
I knew it was going to be a tight race, and it was neck-and-neck to the finish, Schwab said. Going into the race I was focused on keeping my arms longer and not breathing as much. When I took a breath, I was looking to the side to see where the other girls were.
