GREENWICH, Conn. – Samuel J. Brown, a retired Greenwich Police officer and father of Lt. John Brown, died on Jan. 28. He was 83.

Brown started working for the department on March 1, 1958, and retired on July 1, 1981, after nearly 23 years of service. He was a longtime Stamford resident and served as a patrol officer and court liason.

He served in the Army and was on active duty with the Merchant Marine for three years during World War II. He received numerous Silver Shield Association awards, departmental commendations, and letters of recognition and thanks for his actions.

A private memorial service for Brown will be held in Florida. There will be no wake. Donations may be made in his memory to the Silver Shield Scholarship Association.

“We join all members of the department in extending our sincerest sympathy to the Brown family,” said Chief James Heavey in a memo to department personnel.
