YAC Sixth Grade Football Wins Comeback Thriller

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Coach George Meyreles called the victory “undoubtedly my proudest game as a head coach,” in describing his Yorktown Athletic Club Sixth Grade team’s 25-22 victory over border rival Somers Sunday.

“The best part of the game was how the boys came back in the fourth quarter with 3:52 left on the clock down by three (22-19) and feeling like their backs were up against the wall,” Meyreles said. “We don't kick field goals and they knew they had to score to put it away.”

The comeback Huskers drove the ball 55 yards with less than four minutes remaining to score and take a 25-22 lead. Somers had just 34 seconds remaining and 70 yards to cover but the Huskers defense held. Brett Makar led the Huskers in rushing, scoring three touchdowns, including the winning score.

Yorktown will play Bridgeport this Sunday in the Orange Bowl Championship game in Ansonia, Conn.

“This is an enormous accomplishment for boys this age to have such discipline under pressure,” Meyreles said. “The defense came through big at the end and played the pass beautifully to get the pick we needed to take us to the Orange Bowl Championship game.”

The Sixth Grade team coaches are Richie Giannasca (Special Teams/Backs), Matt Talbert (Defensive Coordinator/Lineman) and Steve Frey (Assistant coach/Ends).

The YAC Sixth Grade team roster inclues; Michael Broder, Richie Giannasca, Hunter Embury, Brandon Meyreles, Jamison Embury, Justin Comerford, Patrick Patiemo, Brett Makar, Joe Phelan, Louis John Ragusa, Christian Torres, Frankie Francese, Stefano Belmonte, Colin Kissel, Agustin Cervello, Matthew Giorgio, Matthew Abbate, Matthew Steigmeier, Richie Desiderio, Timothy Miller, Eddie Cohen, Michael Kelleher, Brendan Talbert, Clancy Schwartz, Jesse Maltzman and Christopher Frey.
