Property owners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks after a snowstorm, the city of Stamford says. This ordinance applies to all homeowners and business owners, as well as apartment buildings, condominium associations, churches and schools. Failure to clear the sidewalk after a snowfall could result in a hefty fine.
Owners have up to 12 hours to make carve a walking path unobstructed by snow and ice. It's the law, the city reminds residents, and failure to comply could bring a $90 a day fine to the property owner. The city says it will give residents a little slack because of the heavy snowfalls: Creating a narrow path is fine but some kind of path must be created.
For those interested in reading the requirement for themselves, it's City Ordinance 214-6.
