You can't win them all. The Greenwich Legion baseball senior team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Darien, 5-3. Greenwich left the tying run at first in the seventh inning, as Rick Riscica struck out to end the game.
Greenwich dealt with bad luck on a sweltering evening, getting solid contact off of Darien starter Mike Miller, but hitting the ball right into the defense. Greenwich was on the wrong end of three crucial double plays, squandering its chances of rallying at several points in the game. Adding to the frustration, Miller did not strike out a single Greenwich batter over six innings.
"I thought we were hitting [Miller] well," Greenwich head coach Mike Abate said. "But we hit them right at people and they made the plays. Sometimes in this game the ball doesn't bounce your way."
Greenwich starter Dave Atteling, pitching on three days' rest, was roughed up for five runs in the first inning. Greenwich clawed their way back into the game, but the deficit was too big to overcome. The loss now makes next weekend's three-game regular season finale against Norwalk (15-2) loom that much larger.
"Now we're only one game up, but we can't look ahead to Norwalk," Abate said. "We have a game every day the rest of this week and if we overlook those teams, we'll be right back here tomorrow night talking about the same thing." Greenwich, now 16-1, travels to Fairfield for a game Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
