Atlantic Serves Up a Slice of Tradition

Atlantic Meat Market owner Bob Prastine is an old school butcher who values tradition. Duck into his shop on Wall Street and you'll be stepping back in time to the days when shopping for groceries meant visits to small shops owned by expert tradesmen apprenticed at the feet of their mothers and fathers before them. Prastine's market predates the flood of 1955 that drove most of Norwalk's former bustling downtown merchants out of the neighborhood. Today, he operates his store in much the same way as he did more then half a century ago.

"Everything's fresh, top quality, homemade," he states proudly. "All our chopped meats are ground to order. The beef and poultry is top-grade, all natural. And we welcome special orders for turkey, large and whole cuts...anything our customers request."

Prastine makes his own sweet and hot Italian sausage, southern sage sausage and, occasionally, bratwurst in-house. At Easter, he prepares homemade kielbasa. He takes great pride in his chili - one version "for whimps," the other "from Hell" - and the daily soups, stews and salads he creates each day as part of his lunch counter. Hefty sandwiches are built with premium cold cuts and three- to six-foot subs can be ordered for parties.

Whether it's a monster-sized ribeye or porterhouse steak for your grill, smoked hamhocks for your stew, or even pig's feet that you seek, chances are you'll find it, fresh, at Atlantic. The market is located at 110 Wall Street. For more information, call 203-838-2347.
