Take a Trail & Tackle Trash

Lace up your hiking boots to spend a day outdoors celebrating National Trails Day on June 6 with Weir Farm National Park Service Horticulturist Greg Waters. He'll give a natural history hike along the Norwalk River Watershed Trail. It starts at Rt. 33 in Ridgefield and continues on trails through the Wilton Land Conservation Trust open space, Woodcock Nature Center, Weir Preserve, Weir Farm National Historic Site, and Town of Ridgefield open space. Be sure to have sturdy walking shoes and a water bottle. Or two.

According to the American Hiking Society, America has 200,000 miles of trails. Follow one and you'll breathe fresh air, get your heart pumping (especially on those steep ones) and sleep better for it. Some people have caught on. A 2006 Annual Recreation Study calculated that 76.6 million Americans hike -- and an astonishing 40.4 million trail run. Talk about heart pumping!

Your chance to be a good statistic, with this hike through Wilton and Ridgefield, starts at 10 a.m. and is free, but registration is required. To register and for directions to the hike’s starting point, call (203) 544-9829 ext. 11.  Co-sponsors of the walk are the Norwalk River Watershed Association, Wilton Land Conservation Trust, Woodcock Nature Center, Weir Farm Art Center, Weir Farm National Historic Site, and the Ridgefield Conservation Commission. And however you decide to spend National Trails Day, the Woodcock Center suggests you bring your family, pack a lunch and have a fulfilling day in the outdoors -- even better, bring a trash bag, and leave the woods and trails cleaner than you found them!
