Presidential, Westchester County DA Elections Highlight Tuesday's Ballot

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - While all eyes will be on the Presidential Election on Tuesday, as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump vie for a spot in the Oval Office, local voters have an important decision to make, as a pair of candidates look to become the latest Westchester County District Attorney.

After months of debates and campaigning, Republican Bruce Bendish and Democrat Anthony Scarpino are hopeful of replacing interim Westchseter County District Attorney James McCarty, who took over temporarily for Janet DiFiore when she was appointed to the New York Court of Appeals by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

On Election Day, voters will finally choose between Bendish, a criminal defense lawyer and former prosecutor and Scarpino, a former FBI agent who taught criminal law at Iona College for the vaunted District Attorney’s seat.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s office become a desired destination for politicians looking to boost their profile. Before DiFiore was appointed to the state’s highest judicial post, her predecessor Jeanine Pirro was tasked with hosting a television talk show on Fox News.

Following several debates, incumbent Senator George Latimer is facing a stiff challenge from Rye Councilwoman Julia Killian in the 37th Senate District, while incumbent Republican Senator Terrence Murphy will square off on the ballot against former Pound Ridge politician Alison Boak. Lifetime politician Andrea Stewart-Cousins will retain her seat unopposed in the 35th Senate District.

Longtime Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel is being challenged by Mount Vernon politician Derickson Lawrence - who’s running on a third party line - in the 16th District, while in the 18th Congressional District, incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney is facing a challenge from Republican Phil Oliva, an advisor for Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who has served as a New York Representative since 1989, will run unopposed in the 17th District.

There will be a series of Assembly members running unopposed on Tuesday, with Democratic incumbents J. Gary Pretlow (89th District), Shelley Mayer (90th), Steven Otis (91st), Thomas Abinanti (92nd) and David Buchwald (93rd) set to retain their offices.

In the 94th Assembly District, Yorktown Democrat Brian Higbe and Republican Kevin Byrne of Mahopac are looking to replace the seat vacated by Steve Katz, who is not seeking a fourth term. Incumbent Assemblywoman Sandy Galef is being challenged by Republican hopeful Gregory Purdy.
