Bernbach joined more than 600 cancer patients, survivors, volunteers and staff from all over the United States to urge Congress to make cancer awareness a priority.
Bernbach met with U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel to discuss federal funding for cancer research.
“Congress has a critical role to play in the fight to defeat a disease that kills an estimated 500,000 people in America every year. As an advocate, I let Congressman Engel know that Congress can demonstrate a commitment to the fight against cancer by increasing federal funding for cancer research and prevention, co-sponsoring patient quality of life legislation and eliminating surprise costs for seniors getting colorectal cancer screenings," said Bernbach. “Making these lifesaving policies a priority will help to eliminate death and suffering from cancer.”
Bernbach also asked Engel to help increase funding for research at the National Cancer Institute and for cancer prevention programs at the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cancer survivors and advocates also attended training sessions on how to communicate with elected officials, conducting grassroots activities in communities and engaging the media.
