The neighborhood, just south of Iona College, has been the subject of dangerous, frequent flooding in recent years, as the East Coast has been plagued by seemingly annual “100-year storms.”
Based on a recommendation from the city’s Department of Public Works, the Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to contract New Rochelle-based ELQ Industries to make storm drain improvements in the area of Brookdale Avenue.
The project is expected to cost approximately $3 million, but according to Mayor Noam Bramson, nearly 90 percent of that will be covered through federal and state grants.
The project will improve storm water flow and capacity and will reduce flooding frequency. The scope of the project will include installing a large concrete culvert, replacing a portion of the existing sanitary sewer, new drainage chambers and additional catch basins. Improvements will also be made to existing pipes that reduced the flow due to “poorly designed alignments.”
“This will make a big difference to homeowners that have been hit hard after nearly every significant rainstorm,” Bramson said. “There are a couple other neighborhoods in the city that also need flood relief, and we will continue pursuing grants for those locations.”
