New Rochelle OKs Bids For Parking Garage Lighting

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The New Rochelle City Council on Tuesday accepted bids for a $1.25 million project to install energy-efficient LED lights in the parking garages at New Roc City and the Intermodal Transportation Center.

The project is to be financed by a loan from the New York Power Authority, which would be repaid over seven to nine years through the monthly utility bills.

Mayor Noam Bramson said the new lights would reduce power usage from 1.9 million kilowatts to 1.1 million kilowatts. The project "will provide immediate benefits for both parties," Bramson said, referring to the environment and the community.

The council accepted a low bid of $1.1 million from Best LED Group to buy the lights and fixtures, and a low bid of $155,000 from Circle D Electric to install them. Acceptance of the bids is contingent upon approval of the loan from the Power Authority, which has notified the city that the project is eligible for such funding.

Alexander Tergis, commissioner of public works, recommended approval of the project and told the council that replacing the lights in both garages with high-efficiency light-emitting diodes would greatly reduce both the cost of energy to the city and the cost of maintenance.

Tergis said the LED lamps are estimated to last 18 to 20 years before needing replacement.

Discussion of the project is to continue next week.
