New Rochelle Library President Haina Just-Michael has announced her intention to challenge incumbent legislator Sheila Marcotte for her seat in office, earning endorsements from the Democratic Party, Independence and Working Families Parties.
Just-Michael channeled Thomas Paine’s famous “Common Sense” pamphlet when announcing her run at Paine Lake near the author’s monument in New Rochelle. She cited the county’s financial woes and practice of borrowing money to fund budgets as one of the reasons she’s running for office.
“Borrowed money will need to be paid back with interest, resulting in larger tax increases in future budgets,” she said. “We can’t build a better future if we keep borrowing from the future. That’s just ‘Common Sense.’”
In addition to promoting more financial restraint, Just-Michael said that Westchester needs to invest in its infrastructure and alternative energy initiatives that have not been pursued at the county level.
“We need to get these projects moving as soon as possible,” she said. “This will create jobs and improve the safety and quality of our roads and bridges. The county needs to show leadership in developing alternative energy initiatives, which have proven to be both environmentally and economically sensible.”
Voters will head to the polls to vote on the District 10 County Legislator race on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
