Hastie to Challenge Fertel For New Rochelle's District 5 Council Seat

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y --- A city Board of Education trustee will challenge the Democratic incumbent for an open seat on the City Council.

Jeffrey Hastie will square off against Council Member Barry R. Fertel in the race for the District 5 seat in the Nov. 3 general election.

Hastie, will be running as the candidate of the Republican and Reform parties, and recently won the right to run on the Independence line as well, according to Westchester County Board of Elections.

The candidate, who said his Independence Party victory was the result of a write-in campaign, took the party line with a total of five votes, according to the officials results.

According to a campaign biography, Hastie was elected to the city's Board of Education in 2009 and 2014. He has served on the City Budget Advisory Committee and the Telecommunications Advisory Committee.

Fertel has served as councilman for District 5 since his appointment to the post in 2006, according to his City Council biography. He was elected in 2007 and again in 2011.

According to his biography, he, too, held a seat on the city's Board of Education, serving in various roles on the board, including vice president and president, over a 14-year span.
