HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- Monday night brought the most sleep that Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino’s has had throughout his entire gubernatorial campaign.

The well-rested Republican nominee made that observation to reporters at his local polling station before 9:30 a.m. on Election Day Tuesday.

Astorino's wife, Sheila, and three children accompanied him, as he cast his ballot at Hawthorne Elementary School. The Hawthorne resident is challenging Democratic incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who resides in New Castle.

“You saw the kind of race he ran, which was increasing more vile and desperate and panicky and he did some real ugly things at the end,” said Astorino. “I think voters are going to reject that. They wanted to hear about him, and what he would do and he could not defend the indefensible ultimately with those nasty ads and not putting forth a vision for his second term.”

Astorino said his opponent’s campaign lacked momentum and enthusiasm.

Also on the ballot for governor is Howie Hawkins, a Teamster and freight handler at UPS, running on the green party line; Michael McDermott, a real estate broker, is running on the Libertarian line; and Steven Cohn is on the Sapient Party line, according to Voter411.org.

When asked about being down in the polls, Astorino says the only things that matters if people on “our side” get out and vote and that his campaign "is poised to make history."

“Polls don’t matter,” said Astorino. “We’ve been saying this the whole time.

"We're in a position to win this because everywhere we go people are hopping on our campaign. They're proud to vote."

Astorino said the rest of his day will be spent doing radio interviews and greeting voters at Penn Station, and then he plans to meet with family and friends to await election results.

Astorino said that the campaign was a great experience for his family, allowing them to travel throughout New York State; they are happy it is almost over and look forward to spending more time together.
