WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A near 30-man battle royal broke out on Mamaroneck Avenue and East Post Road in White Plains during the early morning hours Saturday, resulting in two arrests for disorderly conduct, police said.
Multiple units of White Plains police officers arrived at the intersection on a report of an active fight involving a large unruly crowd around 3:10 a.m. Kenneth Anthony Hairston of New Rochelle was reportedly flailing his arms violently to prevent a group of men trying to restrain him from continuing to fight with a larger crowd of more than 30 people, according to the police report. This led to about 100 people to gather on the nearby sidewalk to watch the incident, which took place around 3:52 a.m.
When officers tried to arrest Hairston, police said that he resisted and tucked his arms to his front and ignored several commands to put his hands behind his back, while shouting that he hadn't done anything wrong.
Police forced him to the ground, allowing them to handcuff his left arm, the police report said, and they were able to verbally persuade him to give up his right arm. He was charged with resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a violation, and was held for court June 9.
A few minutes prior, police arrested a Bayport, N.Y. resident and charged her with disorderly conduct and harassment, both violations.
While police tried to separate those involved in the large fight on Mamaroneck Avenue and East Post Road, the 22-year-old woman continued to try to fight, pushing away police and hurling obscenities towards them. The report said she clenched her fist and punched an officer. When that officer tried to arrest her, she reportedly tried to kick him in the groin.
The officer then grabbed the woman, at which point she tried to punch him again, but he brought her to the ground, where he gained better control and was able to arrest her.
While taking her to police headquarters in a patrol car, the report said the woman repeatedly kicked on the back passenger window and knocked it off the track. She was released on $100 bail.
