At approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday night, a man was shot and killed near the intersection of Third Street and Second Avenue in Mount Vernon. Less than an hour later, another victim was shot in the leg outside of the Levister Towers apartment complex, where he sustained non-life threatening incidents.

Police are currently investigating both shootings. It remains unknown if they are related. Acting Police Commissioner Ron Fatigate says the victim may have been targeted.

"The Mount Vernon Police Department is working around the clock to bring the individual or individuals responsible to justice. At this time, information gathered strongly indicates that this was not a random act of violence,” he noted.

"The Mount Vernon Police Department is taking steps to proactively address the threat of gun violence. This includes an increased police presence as well as the assembly of cross-functional teams from homicide, intelligence, and major case units to work more closely to track down those responsible and bring them to justice."

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas stated that this type of violent crime will not be tolerated in the city much longer.

"Those who choose to engage in a life of crime will not run our streets,” he said. “We are dedicated to strengthening public safety and look forward to developing a coalition of law enforcement and non-profit agencies to assist in the effort to create a safer Mount Vernon.”

Thomas noted that the police investigation into this shooting is ongoing, and that his administration is working to eliminate these types of incidents.

"The best offense is the best defense,” he added. We are working to prevent violence by filling the void of hopelessness engulfing a small number of people in our community, many of which are young, with jobs and new opportunities to achieve the American dream.

"The violence that marred this beautiful weekend is something that has happened in cities and towns throughout our country. We need our families, our schools, our churches, our businesses and our neighborhood associations to join together to engage our young people and collaborate on preventing violence from taking hold in the first place. We need them to know that they can do anything with their lives and empower them to see a life past 21 or 25 or 30 years old."

The police investigation into Sunday’s shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact detectives by calling (914) 665-2500 or texting a tip to “274-637” with the body of the text reading MVPD with the tip.
