PELHAM, N.Y. – Merging with the New Rochelle Fire Department might help the Village of Pelham Fire Department save money, but safety is also an issue.

Trustee Joseph Marty said the village would contact the New Rochelle Fire Department to see if it was best for the departments to merge.

The village board discussed the matter during its meeting Tuesday.

Marty said it was best to study how to proceed after meeting Monday with a Pelham Fire Department task force.

“There are always ways to look deeper,” Marty said.

Trustee Paul McGoldrick said the village needs to see how much it would cost to consolidate with New Rochelle's department.

“We have to start looking at how the village is in respect to financing,” he said.

New Rochelle City Manager Charles Strome said last week that he had not heard anything about what the village wanted to do. Strome also said the village was doing a study, and he did not know anything further about its results.

“It’s up to them,” he said.
