NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Jefferson Elementary School in New Rochelle was locked down Friday afternoon while police searched nearby for a robbery suspect.

The New Rochelle school district received an alert from police at 1 p.m. to lock down the elementary school, said Paul Costiglio, a district spokesperson. At 2:45 the district was notified that the lockdown could be lifted.

Nobody was allowed to enter or leave the school during the lockdown.

The robbery took place shortly after noon on the sidewalk outside 154 Drake Ave., said police Detective Capt. Joseph Schaller. A man, either white or Hispanic, 5-foot-8 with a medium build and wearing a black shirt, grabbed a necklace from around the neck of a woman and dashed off, Schaller said. The man was spotted about 3 p.m. without a shirt, police said.

As of 5:30 p.m., the suspect was still at large and police were continuing to canvass the area.
