New Rochelle Police Upgrade Charges Against Suspected South End Burglar

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Following a lengthy investigation, New Rochelle police got their guy and arrested a Bronx man accused of multiple burglaries in the city.

According to police, on Saturday, Dec. 10, officers with the Department’s Property Theft Unit arrested Ferdinand Vargas, 57, after he was spotted by detectives on Beechwood Avenue and was taken into custody without incident.

Vargas had been under surveillance and was suspected of burglarizing several apartment buildings located in the southern section of New Rochelle. At the time of his arrest, Vargas was in possession of multiple lock picks.

Initially, Vargas was charged with individual counts of burglary and criminal impersonation, but as the investigation unfolded, those charges have been upgraded to include four additional counts of burglary that are related to previous crimes.

The investigation into Vargas is ongoing, and he remains remanded to the Westchester County Jail. The New Rochelle Police Department is currently working with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges are to be filed.
