The city was the safest municipality in Westchester County with a population between 75,000 and 99,999 in 2012, according to the 2013 Annual Report that was issued by the New Rochelle Police Department this week.

New Rochelle also ranked as the 10th safest in the country out of 110 similarly sized cities.

The department improved on many vital statistics in 2013. Burglaries in the city dropped dramatically, from 180 in 2012, to 154 in 2013, good for a decrease of 14 percent. Similarly, Robberies are down from 118 in 2011 to 91 in 2012 (23 percent) to 83 (nine percent) in 2013. The department has also seen robberies drop a staggering 33 percent in the last decade. Aggravated assaults were down just three percent year-to-year, but the department has seen a 24 percent since 2004, while the amount of reported larcenies dropped from 1151 to 1129 (also three percent). Fewer intoxicated drivers were arrested by police in 2013, down from 81 in 2012 to 67.

In 2013, the New Rochelle Police Department was more stringent with its code enforcement. In 2012, just nine citations were issued for garbage and litter violations, but in 2013, 78 tickets were written, good for an anomalous 766 percent increase.

“We’re gratified to see our hard work paying off,” New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll said in a statement. “These numbers reflect the vigilance of the department, especially in regards to the robberies and burglaries.”

New Rochelle residents said that they were pleased by their police department’s historically strong numbers, though they weren’t surprised by the impressive statistics.

“There really have quite the police presence. You can’t walk or drive a few blocks without seeing (a patrol car) driving by,” Iona College student Greg Velkoff said.

Congress Street resident Macey Alexander said she has had interactions with both the New Rochelle police and fire departments, and always come out of those exchanges impressed.

“We live in a multi-family house, and there’s been a few situations where we needed some assistance for one reason or another,” she said. “They couldn’t have been more pleasant, and you don’t feel like you’re being interrogated. We couldn’t have more professional people looking after us.”
