New Rochelle Police Department To Recognize National Night Out Tuesday

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - With tensions rising throughout the country in the wake of several recent police-involved shootings, the New Rochelle Police Department has scheduled an open house and community-wide celebration in observance of National Night Out.

Each year, communities come together to recognize National Night Out, an event designed to improve cohesion between the community and police. New Rochelle will celebrate on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

National Night Out is a nationwide program designed to bring communities together and strengthen ties between police and the people they serve. This year’s event - the 33rd anniversary - comes at a time when those ties seem tenuous at best following fatal shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge last week.

On Tuesday, the New Rochelle Police Department is teaming with several local organizations for an afternoon of open house tours at the department, boat tours at Hudson Park with the Harbor Unit and visits with the K-9 Unit. Officers will hold an equipment demonstration and there will be a series of activities for children and raffles for adults. Special this year is a bicycle rodeo and live DJ providing music to participants.

In addition to the officers’ demonstrations, local organizations will be getting in on the fun, with displays and booths of their own touting the services they provide to the city.

New Rochelle will celebrate National Night Out with an open house at the police department from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Harbor Unit tours from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The rain date is scheduled for the following day, Wednesday, Aug. 3.

“National Night Out is a great way to highlight our community partnerships, and strengthen our neighborhood connections,” Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll said. “Thanks to our generous sponsors, this promises to be the best one yet.”
