Beginning this week, the New Rochelle Police Department are stepping up enforcement of seat belt laws and other traffic violations as part of the Buckle Up New York “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

“Click It or Ticket” is a statewide, zero tolerance enforcement campaign designed to increase safety restraint use in New York while preventing highway fatalities and injuries that are caused when seatbelt are improperly utilized.

Recent crash records throughout the state have shown that seatbelt use at night is lower than it is during the daytime, which led to departments arranging checkpoints and emphasis patrols during select holiday weekends.

According to police, the campaign aims to increase the use of seat belts, especially among young people. Statistics show that between 2000 and 2014, more than half of passenger vehicle occupants killed weren’t wearing seat belts- especially at night.

“Our focus is on safety, this upcoming holiday weekend and always,” New Rochelle Police Sgt. Myron Joseph, the traffic unit supervisor, noted. “As the NHTSA campaign notes, you don’t get a second chance to be safe in an accident. Prevention is the key, and seat belts are effective.”
