Juan Barragan-Reyes, 21, pled guilty to lone felony counts of second-degree manslaughter and unlawfully fleeing a police officer, as well as two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter in connection to the death of Shaquan Jackson last year.

Additionally, Barragan-Reyes pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated, one count of reckless driving and was issued summons for speeding, harassment and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A New Rochelle police officer was interviewing Barragan-Reyes’ girlfriend in front of her Fourth Street apartment on Oct. 6 of last year, shortly before noon, when he drove his Honda and made a threatening gesture toward her with Jackson in the front seat, According to Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

Police then entered into a high-speed chase with the defendant that saw him blow through several red lights before hitting a tree and a retaining wall and flipping the Honda, ejecting both passengers onto Webster Avenue.

Jackson was found 29 feet in front of the car, while Barragan-Reyes was found nearly 90 feet away. According to police, Jackson was pronounced dead the next morning, while the defendant was sent to Sound Shore Hospital to recover. He was subsequently arrested by New Rochelle police.

Barragan-Reyes is due back in court on Tuesday, Jan. 27 next year. Assistant District Attorney Heide Mason of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
