Juan Barragan-Reyes, 21, has been charged with lone felony counts of manslaughter and unlawfully fleeing from police, as well as two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter in connection to the death of Shaquan Jackson last year.
Barragan-Reyes was also charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and three violations, including possession of marijuana.
According to Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore, on Oct. 6 of last year, shortly before noon, a New Rochelle police officer was interviewing Barragan-Reyes’ girlfriend in front of her Fourth Street apartment when he drove his Honda and made a threatening gesture toward her with Jackson in the front seat.
Police then entered into a high-speed chase with the defendant that saw him blow through several red lights before hitting a tree and a retaining wall and flipping the Honda, ejecting both passengers onto Webster Avenue.
Jackson was found dead 29 feet in front of the car, while Barragan-Reyes was found nearly 90 feet away. According to police, the defendant was sent to Sound Shore Hospital to recover. He was subsequently arrested by New Rochelle police.
Bail was continued at $30,000. Barragan-Reyes is due back in court on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Assistant District Attorney Heide Mason of the Superior Court Trial Division is prosecuting the case.
