Encouraging all homeowners to make sure their smoke detectors are working, the New Rochelle Fire Department issued a statement regarding Fire Prevention Month (October) and Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4-10).
Noting this year's theme of "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep," New Rochelle Fire Chief Louis DiMeglio said the need for each bedroom to have a working smoke detector cannot be understated.
"This campaign is a great reminder for people to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their bedrooms and to test them monthly," he said. "When properly installed and maintained, they play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries."
DiMeglio also urged homeowners to have a working carbon monoxide detector, noting that the presence of one in each residence is required under state law.
Known as the silent killer, carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that’s a byproduct of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels usually used in home cooking and heating equipment. It can cause death if undetected.
DiMeglio said his department responds to nearly 8,000 calls for service a year, about half of which are EMS and rescue calls.
