NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Six New Rochelle residents, including an infant, remain displaced after a fire tore through their multi-family home on Brookdale Avenue.

According to fire officials, shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday night, a fire sparked on the second story in the rear of the home, quickly spreading to the third floor of the structure. There was fire damage on the upper stories, and smoke and water damage on the first.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were hard at work on the scene, assisting the five adults and infant that were displaced, spokeswoman Caroline Sherwin said. Volunteers were active at the scene as early as 4 a.m., just hours after firefighters corralled the blaze, providing the victims with financial advice, rations and helping them relocate to safety.

Sherwin said that the family was able to retrieve some of their personal belongings, but the home is uninhabitable. She said that the victims are working with friends, family and community partners to determine a long-term solution.

A pair of firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze and were taken to receive treatment locally. The fire is still under investigation, but fire officials don’t believe the cause was suspicious.

On Monday, a nearby neighbor commended the fire department for having the fire knocked down so quickly.

“We didn’t know the family very well, but when we saw the lights and commotion, we moseyed down to see what was going on,” Tricia Campbell said outside the house Monday. “You could see a ton of smoke and a glow from the back. The firefighters had everything figured out pretty quickly.”
