Cop, 26, Expected To Recover After Being Shot In The Face In Westchester

YONKERS, N.Y. - The 26-year-old Yonkers police officer who was shot in the jaw on Monday night is expected to make a full recovery, according to police officials.

During a press conference on Tuesday morning, Yonkers officials said that Officer Kayla Maher remains in serious, but stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx following the shooting during a routine check of a suspicious vehicle on a quiet street Monday night.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25, officers, including Maher was dispatched to the area of Marshall Road, near Ridge Drive, following reports of a suspicious vehicle that was occupied by two suspects.

Upon her arrival, one of the suspects produced a gun, and started shooting at Maher, who returned fire. The officer, who was from the 3rd Precinct, was struck in the face by gunfire.

Police said that two suspects from New Rochelle were taken into custody at the scene, with one suspect transported to a local hospital for gunshot injuries sustained during the incident. He’s been listed in serious, but stable condition. The second suspect is in police custody.

As many as five officers exchanged gunfire with the suspects, police said, whose identities of have not been released as charges are pending against them.

Officials hailed Maher as a "hero," and praised the officer who helped get her out of harm's way amidst a shootout.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Maher and her family," Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said. "The bravery and courage displayed by our officers at the scene was nothing short of heroic, and I am very proud of them.”

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said that he has visited with Maher, reporting that "she's in great spirits," and "hopefully will be released soon."  

According to police a gun was also recovered at the scene. No additional suspects are being sought at this time. The investigation into the shooting is in the early stages, police said, with detectives and investigators “working diligently.” More information is expected to be on Tuesday afternoon regarding the identities of the two suspects.
