NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – A man who police said murdered his girlfriend and assaulted his male roommate was sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison Thursday, Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore’s office said.

Akeem Lindsay, 32, was sentenced on one count of second-degree murder, a felony; one count of first-degree attempted assault, a violent felony; one count of second-degree assault, a violent felony; and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony; in the death of 29-year-old Lisa Stabler following his May 7 conviction from a jury trial.

New Rochelle Police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor at 309 North Ave. about midnight Feb. 11.

Upon arrival, officers said they saw the defendant covered in blood in a hallway inside an apartment, being held down by the roommate, who told police Lindsay had murdered his girlfriend, the district attorney’s office said.

A female witness to the attack also told police that she had taken a machete from Lindsay and put it under a mattress, the district attorney’s office said.

Officers entered a bedroom in the apartment and located Stabler, who was unresponsive, the district attorney’s office said.

Lindsay was taken to a hospital for treatment of a cut on his hand and a search warrant was executed. The machete was also located, the district attorney’s office said.

Lindsay was then arrested and told police that he argued with Stabler and struck her several times with the machete while chasing her through the apartment, the district attorney’s office said.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Laura Murphy of the Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Shameika Mathurin of the Career Criminal Bureau prosecuted the case.
