Yorktown Letter: Resident Responds To The State Of The Union

To the editor:

As a nation that is idealized and feared, we hold great power within the world’s politics and economy. We have strength in numbers, we have military capability that is unmatched, and however, it is our sense of entitlement to be a world enforcer which is our nation’s greatest downfall.

There is constant social unrest within our own borders so it remains hypocritical that we project our will to free people from fear and want within other nations. President Obama emphasized during the 2014 State of the Union that the United States has the enormous opportunity to do good and promote understanding around the globe.

The U.S. has active military stationed in roughly 150 countries across the world. Last year in America, one in six people were battling starvation; there have been numerous mass shootings, government scandals, health-insurance debates, and job instability. It is time America redirects focus onto itself. It is imperative that we address issues such as inequality, poverty, and lack of education that still plague our country. By aiding ourselves, we create a nation that will be stronger, more united, economically stable and efficient. It is time to start promoting cooperation and understanding from within, instead of projecting these ideals out.
