Why should the taxpayers of Peekskill spend $158,060 in “longevity bonuses” for city employees next year? One answer – nobody in City Hall cares whether or not this is well-spent money. They’re going to pay these so-called bonuses just because they’ve always paid them. The state of Connecticut is curbing or ending these payments because Gov. Dannel Malloy recognized that he could not stick his constituents with this waste. The leaders of the City of Peekskill haven’t bothered yet to question, much less eliminate, them. As the Hartford Courant stated in its April 19, 2012 editorial: “Finally, bonuses should reward performance, not endurance. A worker should be rewarded for doing a job more effectively or economically, not for wearing a shine onto the seat of his pants.” How many workers in the private sector do you know that get paid each year to not quit their jobs? Surely, the fiscally conservative Republican mayor of Peekskill feels the same way. No city employee ever leaves voluntarily -- no one is quitting these jobs. There is no justification for longevity bonuses – just politicians afraid to make tough choices. Jim Roberts
