NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Virginia J. Mullins, a longtime New Rochelle resident, died Dec. 2 in Scottsdale, Ariz., with family by her side. She was 88.
Mullins was born in Greenwich, Conn., to Herman and Josephine O'Connor Wyler. She grew up in the Bronx, N.Y., and started her career at Bankers Trust. In 1949, she married Robert M. Mullins Jr., moved to Pelham and began working at Bloomingdale's in New Rochelle.
While raising four children, Mullins began teaching in New Rochelle. Her career spanned more than 25 years at Jefferson and Barnard elementary schools. For many of those years, she worked with special needs children.
Mullins is survived by four children, Patricia (John) Haggerty, of Cave Creek Ariz., Robert M. Mullins III, of New Rochelle, Elizabeth (Bill) Sarrubbo, of Scottsdale, and Kathryn Mullins, of White Plains; a sister, Charlotte (Buddy) Weinhofer, of San Diego; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Petix, of New Rochelle; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; a brother, Ken; and two sisters, Helen and Regina.
Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Lloyd Maxcy and Sons Beauchamp Chapel in New Rochelle. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham Manor. Cremation will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale and final internment will be Dec. 14 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle.
